It appears to have been borrowed from v 4 along the way because the stark ending of "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ" (period) was possibly a bit too much to believe for some copiers or translators. Even though this may be true, it does not take away from your terrific explanation above as it pertains to the context of v. 4 immediately after -- totally applicable to exactly what you are saying.
